건축주는 삼천포에 오래 살았다. 오랜 숙고 끝에 그는, 사방으로 삼천포 일대가 내려다보이고, 저 멀리 남해 바다와 목섬까지 조망할 수 있는 야트막한 언덕 위의 대지를 선택했다. 은퇴를 앞둔 그에게, 여생을 보내온 터전을 다시 바라보며 삶을 정리하고자 하는 바람이 있었으리라.
대지는 장변의 이등변삼각형 형태로, 남북으로는 좁고 동서로 길며 삼면이 도로에 접해 있었다. 특히 남측 도로는 개방되어 있었지만, 이 방향으로 시선을 열 경우 집의 ‘바깥’과 ‘안’이 지나치게 가까워지는 문제가 있었다. 해법은 중정을 두어 내향적 개방감을 만들어내는 것이었다. 사실 설계를 의뢰 받을 당시, 건축주는 ‘중정이 있는 집’이라는 단 하나의 조건을 제시했는데, 그 이유를 짐작할 수 있었다.
진입은 사거리의 교차점이면서 삼각형 대지의 꼭짓점이자 가장 높은 레벨에서 시작된다. 이 진입부는 담장을 세워 외부를 완전히 배제하기보다는, 포치를 통해 외부와 내부 사이의 적절한 거리감을 조율하고자 했다. 계단을 몇 단 올라 현관에 도달하게 되며, 이 계단과 포치는 도시와 건축 사이, 바깥과 안의 경계를 매개하는 전이 공간이다. 작은 화단이 놓인 이 계단 주변은, 매일 집에 들어설 때마다 꽃과 식물의 기운을 마주하게 하며, 생의 잔잔한 기쁨을 전달한다. 건축주는 이 자리 옆에 은목서를 심었다. 은은한 향이 이 집을 감싸며, 집으로 들어오는 이들의 감각을 부드럽게 감싼다. 현관 앞 포치는 석재로 구성된 다공적인 디테일을 통해 프라이버시를 확보하면서도 시선과 빛을 적절히 받아들인다. 이는 닫힘과 열림 사이의 균형을 모색한 공간적 장치이자, 도시와의 관계를 조율하는 방식이기도 하다.
건물에 들어서면 긴 복도가 이어진다. 복도 옆으로는 중정이 펼쳐지며, 빛과 바람이 스며드는 이 내부의 여백은 외부로부터의 완충이자, 내면을 환기하는 장소가 된다. 복도를 따라 거실에 이르면, 전면창 너머로 삼천포 일대와 남해 바다가 시야 가득 펼쳐진다. 한 층 오르면 동서의 길이 방향으로 넓게 펼쳐진 테라스에 도달한다. 이 테라스는 동남쪽으로 도시와 바다를 향해 열려 있으며, 끝에 이르면 집은 시야 뒤로 사라지고 저 멀리 바다와 ‘나’만 남는다.
건축가는 상상한다. 건축주가 이 집에 들어와 긴 복도를 거닐며, 자신이 걸어온 삶을 조용히 되짚어보고, 테라스에 이르러 바다를 바라보며 여생을 돌아보는 풍경을. 이 집을 설계하며 나는 다시금 깨닫게 된다. 저 멀리 바라보며 나의 “바깥”을 마주할 때마다 내 “안”을 응시하게 된다는 것을. 저 멀리 바라보며 실존에 대한 물음이 내 안에 일렁거린다.
Simyeonjae House in Samcheonpo
The client has lived in Samcheonpo for most of his life. After long contemplation, he chose a gently elevated site from which the city of Samcheonpo unfolds in all directions, with distant views stretching toward the South Sea and Mokseom Island. Approaching retirement, he seemed to wish for a place where he could look back upon the land that had shaped his life, and quietly bring his journey into focus.
The site takes the form of an isosceles triangle with a long east–west edge, narrow in the north–south direction, and bordered by roads on three sides. While the southern road offered openness, fully opening the house toward this direction risked collapsing the distance between the public exterior and the private interior. The architectural response was to introduce a courtyard—an inward-facing void that creates openness without exposure. In fact, when commissioning the project, the client expressed only one clear request: a house with a courtyard. The reason soon became evident.
The approach begins at the highest point of the site, at the apex of the triangular plot where two roads intersect. Rather than enclosing the house behind a solid wall, the entrance is mediated by a porch that calibrates the relationship between outside and inside. A short flight of steps leads to the front door; together with the porch, this sequence forms a transitional space between city and dwelling, exterior and interior. A small garden beside the steps ensures that flowers and plants greet the residents each day, offering a quiet, everyday joy. Here, the client planted a fragrant sweet osmanthus tree, whose subtle scent gently envelops the house and those who enter it. The porch, articulated with porous stone details, secures privacy while allowing light and filtered views to pass through—an architectural device that seeks balance between openness and enclosure, and a measured dialogue with the surrounding city.
Upon entering the house, a long corridor unfolds. Alongside it, the courtyard opens inward, allowing light and air to permeate deep into the interior. This internal void acts both as a buffer from the outside world and as a space for inward reflection. Following the corridor leads to the living room, where expansive glazing frames panoramic views of Samcheonpo and the South Sea beyond. Ascending one level, a broad terrace stretches along the east–west axis of the house. Open toward the southeast, it faces the city and the sea; at its far end, the house recedes from awareness, leaving only the distant horizon and the self standing quietly before it.
The architect imagines the client walking slowly along the long corridor, retracing the path of his life in silence, then arriving at the terrace to contemplate the sea and the years ahead. Through the design of this house, I came to realize once again that the act of looking far outward inevitably turns one’s gaze inward.
